Interesting question from a How to Paint Faux Brick customer:

I am a Spanish teacher in Indiana and I just purchased your faux brick instruction download. I would like to change my class room of high gloss cement blocks into a hacienda. I want to faux paint a terracotta color wash on the walls and incorporate my chalkboards into the scheme. Should I color wash first or do the bricks first ? Also, I have a giant bulletin board/wall which seems to be covered with some type of wall covering. Is there anything I could paint over it ?
Thanks ,

Hi Jennifer,

What a cool idea! Painting a Spanish Hacienda in a Spanish Speaking Classroom is one of the best new ideas I have seen for my Faux Brick Video.

You should first paint the entire room with the terracotta color wash. The reason for this is…. the color was will need to be applied evenly. If you tried to paint a faux finish around the faux bricks and brick breakouts, it would come out choppy and uneven.

That being said… you will need to add some extra color wash around the painted brick areas, to give extra depth and realism. It is all explained in the video and ebook guide you purchased.

Your other question about applied paint techniques over wall covering is answered in a article I wrote for – THAT Painter Lady – website. You can find it at:

I hope this information is helpful. Let us all know how your project turns out. Send pictures if you can!
